It’s Time to Reset for Spring!
Spring is officially here tomorrow, March 20th, 2019. The new change in season brings a reminder for getting all of your fire and life safety needs in order. The time in-between the start of Daylight Savings and the first day of spring is a great time to do the following:
- Test Smoke Alarms
- Test Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Create and/or go over your Emergency Evacuation Plan
- Clean unwanted clutter
Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Smoke alarms in your home are extremely important, because when working properly they notify you when a fire has started. This helps ensure that you and your family have enough time to evacuate your home in the event of a fire. But, the smoke alarms can only alert you if they have adequate battery supply.
Carbon monoxide detectors are also an important tool in helping keep you and your family safe at home. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas that needs a detector to be found. Each state has their own requirements for carbon monoxide detectors, but if you do have them in your home it is important to make sure that are in proper working order.
It is important to test both your residential smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors once a month. Along with testing your devices once a month, you should also replace the batteries in these devices. The beginning of spring is a great opportunity to go around and replace all of the batteries no matter if they fail their test or not.

Emergency Evacuation Plan
Spring time is also a great opportunity to sit down with your family or coworkers and create an emergency evacuation plan. Your plan should include:
- A method for reporting fires and any other emergencies.
- An Escape route; floor plans, workplace maps, and assembly locations.
- Names, titles, and phone numbers of everyone within your home/building.
Once you have a plan created it is important that you practice it regularly. If you already have a plan in place, the beginning of spring is a great opportunity to get everyone together to practice.

Spring cleaning is a great way to create a fresh start to the summer. It is also a great activity to help eliminate clutter in your home or office that could lead to potential fire dangers. Having clutter near cooking equipment, heating units, electrical wiring, and candles or other open flames is a danger to both you and your family. It is also extremely important to make sure that pathways and exits are not blocked. This will help ensure that you are able to evacuate properly.
