Are Your Kids Prepared for a Fire at School?
Summer break is over and kids are heading back to school. With the new school year starting kids will now be spending the majority of their time as students on campus. It is important for these students to feel comfortable and safe while at school. Part of this safety involves the campus and students being prepared in the event of a fire.
Fire drills should be held once a month when school is in session. They should be done at both unexpected and expected times. Fire drills should also be done during different conditions. For example while in class, during an assembly, etc. This will help ensure that everyone on campus is prepared to evacuate during different circumstances.
On the day of the fire drill everyone on campus should participate. This will ensure that everyone knows what the alarm sounds and where to evacuate to. Students that have special needs should be assigned a buddy or an aid that is responsible for helping them evacuate safely.
While everyone is assembled in their evacuation spots it is important that everyone is leaving the building as quickly and as orderly as possible. It is important for everyone to evacuate fast, but it is more important that everyone evacuates safely.
Once everyone is in their evacuation spots rosters should be used to ensure that everyone on campus is attended for. Everyone should also stay in their evacuation spots until they are given the ‘all clear’ to go back to their classrooms.
All exits on campus must be inspected daily by staff members. This will help ensure that doors, stairways, and other exits are unblocked and working properly in case of an emergency. Also, every room should have a map posted that clearly identifies two ways out of the room.
Here at IFS we want to ensure that you are always prepared for a fire emergency no matter where you are. If you are unsure of your exit plan while at school, talk to a teacher or official on campus. If you want to know more about fire and life safety while at school or are interested in fire protection on your campus give us a call at 888-987-5322.
